Nairobi Summer School on Climate Justice (NSSCJ)

The Nairobi Summer School on Climate Justice (NSSCJ) is an initiative pioneered by the Pan African Climate Justice Alliance (PACJA), and is currently co-coordinated with Kenyatta University based in Nairobi, Kenya.. The school is conceptualized as an intergenerational platform to share, learn, and network on disruptive ideas that are needed to catalyze economy-wide transformation in a climate catastrophic world.

Since the school’s inception in the midst of Covid-19 in 2020, the Pan African Climate Justice Alliance has successfully delivered three Nairobi Summer School on Climate Justice Cohorts (2021, 2022 and 2023), with more than 900 alumni.

The first, second and third cohorts of Nairobi Summer School on Climate Justice took place in the main campus of Kenyatta University in Nairobi Kenya

The initiative targets youths from all over the continent, including climate advocates, activists, campaigners, policymakers, grassroots community leaders, academia, climate scientists, researchers, smallholder producers’ organizations and trade union members, and leaders of Civil society organizations, Non-governmental Organisations, Faith-based organizations, Community-based organizations, Self-help groups, youth groups, women’s groups.

 

  • Those with O level certificate or the equivalent high school matriculation
  • Be between 18-35 years of age.
  • Have fluency in English and/or French languages; and
  • Have a valid passport (for non-Kenyan applicants).

 

The Nairobi Summer School on Climate Justice is delivered in various blended learning approaches.

 

The main modes of delivery include:   keynote presentations, illustrated lectures, facilitated group discussions, plenary discussion,  experience sharing, audio-visual displays, case studies, field visits and excursions. The mixed delivery methodology aimed at ensuring participatory training where both trainers and trainees optimize on knowledge acquisition using different approaches. Instead of training participants as end user of this knowledge, the training-of-trainers approach is adopted to enable the multiplier effect needed to build a critical mass for Africa and beyond

 

There will be online transmission via zoom with interpretation for the virtual resource persons and the shortlisted virtual applicants

There are limited scholarships that are awarded competitively by the Pan African Climate Justice Alliance, and the other options are as follows; 

  • Costs for 2 Weeks In-Person Training
  • International applicants are required to meet their training cost (return economy ticket, visa fee, accommodation, conference package, meals, and certificate)- USD 3,500,  
  • Local Kenyan applicants: (accommodation, conference package, meal, and certificate) – USD 2500
  • Costs for 2 Weeks Virtual Training
  • Virtual applicants: (tuition fee and certificates) – USD 300

Participants are also encouraged to seek financial support from their affiliated organization that can sponsor them for the training.
