On August 10, 2024, the SONYO Hall in Hargeisa, Somaliland, transformed into a vibrant hub for climate action, thanks to a dynamic workshop organized by Nairobi Summer School on Climate Justice (NSSCJ) Cohort IV alumni.
The workshop, hosted in collaboration with the Centre for Climate Change and Land Restoration (CCCLR), aimed to equip young activists with the tools and knowledge necessary to tackle the pressing issues of climate justice in Somaliland. It was a testament to the profound influence of NSSCJ’s training and its alumni’s dedication to translating their knowledge into impactful community initiatives.
The event was spearheaded by Abdikadir Mohamud Mohamed, Mawliid Mustafe Ahmed, and Mohamed Abdillahi Yusuf, with Abdikadir and Mawliid representing NSSCJ’s Cohort IV and Mohamed, an alumnus of Cohort III, serving as the facilitator. Their combined expertise and passion set the stage for a transformative experience for the 30 youth activists from across Somaliland who attended.
As Mohamed Abdillahi Yusuf aptly noted, “The workshop’s success is a direct reflection of the cross-learning among NSSCJ cohorts. Our alumni are not just participants but active contributors to the global climate justice movement.” This sentiment was echoed throughout the day as attendees engaged in interactive discussions, group activities, and expert presentations, exploring the intersections of climate change and social justice.
The workshop’s structure was designed to deepen participants’ understanding of climate justice and its local relevance. By fostering a collaborative environment, the event allowed for the exchange of best practices and strategies, showcasing how the skills and insights gained from NSSCJ are applied in real-world scenarios.
The involvement of CCCLR in organizing the workshop highlighted the importance of partnerships in advancing climate action. By working together, NSSCJ alumni and CCCLR created a platform that not only addressed local climate challenges but also encouraged cross-cohort learning and the sharing of innovative solutions.
Participants left the workshop equipped with enhanced skills in advocacy, community organizing, and communication, crucial for advancing climate justice. The development of actionable plans and strategies demonstrated the practical application of NSSCJ’s teachings and the capacity of alumni to drive meaningful change.
Reflecting on the workshop’s success, it’s evident that NSSCJ continues to make a significant global impact. By empowering alumni and providing them with the tools to effect real change, NSSCJ is shaping a more just and sustainable future. The recent workshop in Somaliland stands as a shining example of how the lessons learned at NSSCJ are being translated into impactful actions, demonstrating the program’s enduring influence and the commitment of its alumni to creating a better world.
