The Pan African Climate Justice Alliance (PACJA) and Kenyatta University (KU) are planning to roll up the accredited programme on Climate Justice after two years of partnership. The duo has been working together in implementing Nairobi Summer School on Climate Justice.
NSSCJ is conceptualized as an intergenerational platform to share, learn and network on disruptive ideas that are needed to catalyze economy-wide transformation in a climate-catastrophic world. The school adopts a society-wide focus, targeting sectoral and thematic experts and frontline activists irrespective of formal education and cultural backgrounds.
During the official launch of the call for application for NSSCJ cohort III, Dr. Joseph Kurauka from the Department of Environmental Studies and Community Development, Kenyatta University disclosed that the University is discussing the procedures for processing accreditation for a certified master’s course on Climate Justice. This outcome will hugely shape the position of the Summer School training in the climate discourse in both the University and beyond.
Besides, the message from Kenyatta University Management represented by Prof Waceke Wanjohi, the Deputy Vice- Chancellor, Kenyatta University also emphasized the need to address the challenges of climate change collectively. In the dynamism of advancing knowledge on the impacts of climate justice, a pivotal lens of climate justice serviced by PACJA shapes the discourse on how the institutions of learning should address climate change and climate justice in their learning curriculum.
Dr. Mithika Mwenda, the Executive Director of PACJA, speaking at the launch function, said that introspecting on the two years of implementing the NSSCJ, the initiative has been on, it is worth jubilation. It started in 2019 as a concept, and now it has escalated to a big idea, and still, the future looks bright; who knows, it may end up being an institute on its stand-alone.
“The bold dream of the Summer School is to see young people being in the stewardship of climate justice efforts in this continent. It is a dream that has become a reality, and we applaud all the key parties, partners and sponsors who have made this a success” Dr. Mithika said.
Since its inception, the school has trained over 900 young people from various backgrounds, countries, and continents. Over two years, Nairobi Summer School alumni have helped shape narratives about climate justice throughout Africa and beyond through campaigns, climate change negotiations, and other national, regional, continental, and global advocacy processes.
